West Loop

The West Loop went from meatpacking to Michelin in about twenty years. Old warehouses on Randolph and Fulton Market now hold some of the city's best-known restaurants, corporate headquarters and loft condos. It's dense, new and busy, and you can be at your desk downtown in minutes.

What is it like to live in the West Loop, Chicago?

The West Loop is the neighborhood where dinner reservations are a competitive sport. Randolph Street and Fulton Market are lined with restaurants, bars and hotels in former warehouses, and new towers keep filling in around them. Greektown runs along Halsted, and the United Center is a short ride west. Days are busy with office traffic. Evenings and weekends are when the restaurants take over.

What kinds of homes are in the West Loop?

Timber and concrete lofts in converted industrial buildings, mid-rise condos from the 2000s, and newer high-rise condos and apartments. Single-family homes are rare. Most buyers here are comparing buildings, so amenities, assessments and parking do a lot of the deciding.

How do you get around?

The CTA Green and Pink lines stop at Morgan, in the middle of Fulton Market. The Blue Line runs along the Eisenhower Expressway on the south edge, and Union Station and Ogilvie, Metra's two big downtown terminals, sit on the neighborhood's east edge. The Kennedy and Eisenhower expressways meet here.

Thinking about buying or selling in the West Loop?

I'm Megan Sullivan with Compass. In a neighborhood with this much new construction, the question is always what's getting built next door. I'll help you check the view, the building and the pipeline before you commit.
