River North

River North is downtown living with the volume up. Restaurants, galleries, rooftop bars and design showrooms fill the blocks between Michigan Avenue and the river, and the Riverwalk is your evening stroll. Home here usually means a high-rise or a brick-and-timber loft, with the Loop a bridge away.

What is it like to live in River North, Chicago?

Everything is close and most of it is open late. River North has one of the densest collections of restaurants and nightlife in the city, plus a gallery district centered on Superior and Huron streets. The river forms the south and west edges, so the Riverwalk, the water taxis and the architecture boat tours are all in the neighborhood. It's lively on weekends, which buyers either love or plan around by choosing the right block and the right floor.

What kinds of homes are in River North?

High-rise condos and apartments make up most of it, along with brick-and-timber lofts in converted warehouses and a small number of townhomes. Buildings range from 1960s landmarks like Marina City to brand-new towers. Assessments, amenities, parking and views vary widely from one building to the next.

How do you get around?

The CTA Red Line stops at Grand and at Chicago. The Brown and Purple lines stop at Merchandise Mart and at Chicago. The Loop is a short walk across any of the river bridges, and the Kennedy Expressway ramps are at the neighborhood's west end.

Thinking about buying or selling in River North?

I'm Megan Sullivan with Compass. In a high-rise market, you're buying the building as much as the unit. I'll help you read the reserves, the special assessment history and the rental cap before you fall for the view.
