Ravenswood

Ravenswood is front porches on one side of the tracks and breweries on the other. The residential streets are some of the leafiest on the North Side, lined with old frame houses and brick two-flats. Along Ravenswood Avenue, former factories now hold taprooms, a distillery, art studios and offices.

What is it like to live in Ravenswood, Chicago?

Ravenswood is quiet in a way that surprises people this close to Lincoln Square and Andersonville. The blocks are residential, the trees are tall, and most errands point you toward Montrose, Damen or Lawrence. The exception is the industrial corridor along the rail line, where old factory lofts have been repurposed into breweries, a distillery, art studios and architecture firms. Locals call the brewery stretch Malt Row, and it gets its own festival.

What kinds of homes are in Ravenswood?

Victorian and frame single-family homes, brick two-flats and three-flats, vintage courtyard condos, and loft conversions near the tracks.

How do you get around?

The CTA Brown Line stops at Montrose and at Damen. Metra's Union Pacific North line stops at Ravenswood station, near Lawrence, which is the fastest ride downtown. Buses run on Damen, Montrose, Lawrence and Ashland.

Ravenswood fun facts

  • Ravenswood started in 1868 as a commuter suburb. The Ravenswood Land Company bought 194 acres of farmland eight miles north of the city.
  • The name has nothing to do with ravens. A member of the land company had lived in a town called Ravenswood back East.
  • Chicago annexed it in 1889, along with the rest of Lake View township.
  • Ravenswood is not an official community area. It straddles Lincoln Square and Uptown.
  • The Deagan Building, once a musical instrument factory, is now studios and offices.
