North Center

North Center is the part of the North Side where the city exhales a little. Brick two-flats and single-family homes line the side streets, the six-way corner at Lincoln, Damen and Irving Park handles dinner and errands, and the Brown Line gets you downtown without a car. Come hungry in June. That's Ribfest.

Daily life runs through the six-way intersection of Lincoln Avenue, Damen Avenue and Irving Park Road, where you'll find restaurants, coffee and live music at Martyrs' just down Lincoln. A block north, Northcenter Town Square hosts a farmers market from June through October. Head west and the streets get quieter until you reach the Chicago River and Horner Park.

Mostly brick two-flats and three-flats, vintage single-family homes, and a steady supply of newer construction. Condos cluster near Lincoln Avenue and the Brown Line. Single-family homes make up a bigger share of the housing here than in the lakefront neighborhoods, which is a big reason buyers who want more house look here.

The CTA Brown Line stops at Irving Park, Addison and Montrose. Buses run on Damen, Western, Irving Park and Addison. Lincoln Avenue cuts diagonally through the neighborhood, which makes the grid a little more interesting than usual.
