The Gold Coast is quiet for how central it is. The residential streets between State and the lake are leafy and slow, with some of the best-preserved 19th-century houses in the city. Then you turn onto Oak or Rush and it's shopping, hotels and steakhouses. The lakefront path and Oak Street Beach are right across the Drive, and the Magnificent Mile starts at the neighborhood's south end.
Vintage co-ops and condos in prewar buildings, mid-century and newer high-rises, and a limited supply of rowhouses and mansions on streets like Astor, State and Dearborn. Co-ops are more common here than almost anywhere else in Chicago, and they come with their own rules on financing and board approval.
The CTA Red Line stops at Clark/Division and at Chicago. Lakefront express buses and the buses on Michigan Avenue and State Street cover the rest. Most daily errands are a few blocks away.
I'm Megan Sullivan with Compass. A co-op is a different purchase than a condo, and a 1920s building is a different animal than a 2010s tower. I'll walk you through the financials and the fine print in plain English.
