Bucktown

Bucktown is Wicker Park's calmer next-door neighbor. Damen Avenue has the boutiques and brunch, The 606 trail runs along the south edge, and the blocks in between are mostly houses: old workers cottages next to sleek new builds. It was named for goats, and yes, people still bring that up.

What is it like to live in Bucktown, Chicago?

Bucktown is mostly residential, and that's the draw. The shops and restaurants cluster on Damen, Armitage and Milwaukee, so you can get coffee and dinner without living on top of a bar. The 606, an elevated trail built on an old rail line, gives you 2.7 miles of car-free path for running, biking or a slow evening lap. Wicker Park's nightlife is a few blocks south when you want it.

What kinds of homes are in Bucktown?

More single-family homes than most neighborhoods this close to downtown: workers cottages, brick two-flats converted to single-family, and a lot of newer construction. You'll also find loft conversions and small condo buildings. Lots are city-sized, so garages, roof decks and finished basements carry real weight in pricing.

How do you get around?

The CTA Blue Line stops at Western, on the west side, and at Damen, just over the border in Wicker Park. The Kennedy Expressway forms the east edge, and Metra's Clybourn station sits just across it. Buses run on Damen, Armitage, Fullerton and Western.

Bucktown fun facts

  • The name comes from the goats raised here in the 1800s. Polish settlers called the area Kozie Prery, or Goat Prairie.
  • The 606 opened on June 6, 2015. The name is a nod to the first three digits of Chicago zip codes.
  • The rail line under the trail was raised about twenty feet in the 1910s to get trains off the street.
  • Bucktown is the eastern part of the official Logan Square community area.
