Avondale

Avondale is the Northwest Side neighborhood the rest of the world just noticed. Time Out ranked it the fifth coolest neighborhood on the planet in 2025. On the ground it still feels like working Chicago: brick two-flats, old smokestacks, and Milwaukee Avenue lined with sausage shops, taquerias, record stores and new wine bars.

What is it like to live in Avondale, Chicago?

Avondale is unpolished in the best way. Milwaukee Avenue is the spine, and Belmont and Diversey fill in around it with bakeries, breweries, music venues and restaurants that draw people from across the city. The old and the new sit side by side here, a decades-old sausage counter next to a natural wine bar. On the east side, the Chicago River has become a draw of its own, with boat rentals and patios at Rockwell on the River.

What kinds of homes are in Avondale?

Brick two-flats and three-flats, workers cottages, bungalows, and a growing number of newer condos and single-family homes. Prices have historically run below Logan Square, next door to the south, which is why a lot of buyers end up looking here.

How do you get around?

The CTA Blue Line stops at Belmont, with Addison at the north edge, for a direct ride to the Loop or to O'Hare. The Kennedy Expressway runs through the neighborhood. Buses run on Belmont, Diversey, Kedzie, Pulaski and Milwaukee.
